Farmer's market shows rise in demand for organic food
Environmental and economic benefits from the expanding market
The Environment and Sustainable Unit at the American University of Beirut organized an on-campus farmer's market in March.

The products on display were fresh and organic. They ranged from juices to dark chocolates and pastries.

The winter souk demonstrates locals' growing interest in organic and natural foods. This reflects the worldwide trend. Consumer demand continues to increase as more and more countries start to cultivate organically.

Beyond the promised economic benefits from the expanding market, organic food production is good for the environment.

Organic food production reduces soil and water contamination and preserves local wildlife.

Since most organic food is distributed locally, transportation is cut. This means less carbon emissions and aid in the fight against global warming.
